A Krampus Night Out in Scranton

By AL J. Vermette

On a Saturday night in December, I got to do something I hadn’t done since 2018…..get into my Krampus costume. The last time I donned my fur suit, mask, bells, and skeletal children strapped to my back was for Haunt The Halls, an event I was invited to in Salem, Massachusetts. (And yes that Salem!) However, sadly I hadn’t had the chance to attend any other events in the last few years and the global catastrophe that we all faced the last two years had my Krampus outfit sitting in limbo just waiting for its moment to be unleashed.

Although there were a few Krampus events going on in nearby towns, my schedule had been a little nuts with just coming off Blood Fest, getting out Blood Moon Rising, and bringing back Werewolf Magazine plus my day job had me working 55 hours a week so I never got the time to drive to any other area for a Krampus event. It was while looking for something Krampus to do this Holliday season that I found two dark souls like myself who were looking to do something Krampus as well. They were from Scranton, Pennsylvania a stone’s throw from where I’ve been living the last few years and it was a match made in Heaven….or more like Hell in our case. They were a couple named Brian and Amy who like me were deep into the Krampus scene.

We decided to get together on Saturday night December 17th to roam the streets of Scranton to scare the shit out of anyone we encountered. We meet outside a little pub named The Bog and from there we three from Hell roamed the night searching for victims to frighten. Brian and I were dressed as Krampus up-holding the long tradition of men wandering the streets dressed as the beast to scare people as Amy was depicted as the Christmas witch, Perchta. She was dressed in all white with trails of blood running from her flowing gown along with a three-foot sewing needle and a giant spool of thread that is said to be Perchta’s way of delivering torture to naughty children by gutting them and replacing his bellies with rocks, sticks, and dirt.

Together we three with fur, horns, and over-sized stitching implements walked the night going from one bar/restaurant to another meeting people, spreading the word of Krampus, and scaring the shit out of any kids we encountered along our way. As we walked past one eatery with big glass windows, people saw us walking by and came out to greet us. One mother, I kid you not, pushed her son out the door to us and called said “Here take this one!” (yeah great parenting there!)

Along our path, a lot of people stopped to have their pictures taken with us and by the time we returned to The Bog (great location name by the way), we took photos with people and hung out in the bar. I had a great time and I look forward to doing it again with Brian and Amy next Krampus season.
