Lost Girl

By Kraven The She Wolf

Created by writer Michelle Lovretta, the TV series Lost Girl told the story of Bo Dennis, a young woman who has no idea who or what she was because of growing up as an orphan. You see poor Bo has the great misfortune of unintentionally killing her lovers by feeding on their life force killing them during intermit contact. It’s something she has little control of and has no idea why she does this to them only that each man…or woman Bo sleeps with ends up a dead body.

Always having to keep on the move from city to city so the police don’t discover her dark sex life, Bo takes a job at a hotel bar where she meets a young woman by the name of Kenzi who is being attacked by a man who is trying to date rape her by slipping a roofie into the girl’s drink. Bo sees this and as the man tries to take the girl to his hotel room, Bo attacks and drains him off his life force leaving nothing but a dried-out husk.

Shortly after, two homicide detectives investigate the strange body found in the elevator and bring it to the attention of a secret group they work for. Meanwhile Bo brings the young woman back to her place to sleep it off. When the girl wakes and remembers seeing Bo kill the man in a strange fashion. Bo tries to explain that she doesn’t know how or why she can do such things but Kenzi is grateful for Bo saving her and the two become friends. Not long after the two cops track down Bo by order of their underground covert group, Bo is brought before a council of strange people.

She is told that they are from a race of beings called the Fae (short for Fairy which covers all magical creatures) and that it seems that she may be one of them. Bo learns that she is a Succubus, a type of Fae that can drain the life force from her victims when engaging in sexual contact. They offer to teach her how to control her urges and discover that she can sleep with other Fae without killing them such as the lead detective who found her named Dyson. Dyson is a Fae shapeshifter werewolf who befriends Bo and eventually becomes her on-again off-again bed partner. Along with Dyson, Bo also beds Doctor Lauren Lewis, a human who helps and studies the Fae at the secret location where the creatures meet.

As Bo joins the Fae and learns their way of life, she learns how to control herself so as not to harm any humans she may get close with. Kenzi sort of joins the Fae as a human since she is BBFs with Bo and is accepted into the Fae community.

Lost Girl was a Canadian production that ran for 5 seasons with 77 episodes that premiered on Showcase and in the U.S. was shown on the Syfy Channel. It was released on September 12, 2010, and ended on October 25, 2015, giving the supernatural drama a good run on Canadian, the U.S., and other television stations around the world. Upon its release, Lost Girl was the highest-rated Canadian scripted series of all time on the Showcase network and brought in a high reception.

As one can guess, sex was a big part of the series since its lead was non-other than a succubus….a sex demon. This was…and still is so far the only time a succubus was the lead in a TV series, something that was very bold and very refreshing to see. Sure vampires, witches, and even werewolves have led TV shows before like Vampire Diaries, Charmed, Teen Wolf, and hell even the devil in Lucifer, but we never had a succubus before. Also Bo has the acknowledgment of being maybe the very first bisexual lead character in a TV series….at least as far as I know. Again this is something bold and refreshing to see on television.

Lost Girl’s other cast of people and creatures was Trick, a gnome bartender and owner of a Fae pub where the members of the crowd hang out and just be themselves. Since they all lived in a world of humans, their society had to live under the radar of the human world much as in the same way the TV series Grimm had its Wesen (creatures) living among humankind but just out of sight. Their underground lifestyle always hidden just under the nose of humanity.

Bo was played by Anna Silk a Canadian actress who is best known for this TV series. Police detective and werewolf Fae Dyson was played by Kris Holden Ried who ironically also played the giant werewolf Lycan in the movie Underworld Awakening. Bo’s BFF was played by Canadian actress Ksenia Solo who brought to the show a little comic relief.

Lost Girl was one of these shows that never hit the big time like Buffy, Vampire Dairies, or Supernatural here in the States but it is well remembered by those of us who watched and enjoyed the show. Episodes can be found on YouTube and also on DVD. It’s just a fun little show full of monsters and sex….you gotta love it!
